General Recommendations

Take a practice test to get comfortable with the format of the test. This practice test will not be evaluated.
Use all of the time allocated to answer each question. We encourage candidates to spend some time planning and structuring their answers before responding. In the case of written questions, try to use the last 30 seconds to proofread your answer and to fix mistakes in spelling and grammar.

Speaking section

Speak clearly, articulating well
Speak at a natural and even pace
Only the last response recorded will be evaluated, so you can try again if you are not satisfied with your first response. There is no need to worry about pauses, repeating a word or self-correction - these are natural parts of speaking. Just don’t forget to keep an eye on the timer!
Speak for as long as you can! Response length can have an impact on your grade, as you are more likely to obtain a higher grade if you develop your answers to the best of your ability. Longer answers allow you to demonstrate a broader vocabulary and a variety of grammar and sentence structures.

Make sure you have the correct keyboard installed before the test
Proofread your answers to correct mistakes in spelling and grammar

Using a Mac

Go to System Preferences
Choose Keyboard
Choose Input Sources
Click +
Select Chinese (Simplified) – Pinyin – Simplified then click Add
Make sure ‘Show Input menu in menu bar’ is checked.
Use the language icon in the menu bar at the top to switch modes.

Using Windows

Click on the Windows Start menu button, then click ‘Control Panel’.
Find ‘Clock, Language and Region’ and click on ‘Change keyboards or other input methods’.
Click on ‘Change Keyboards’
Click on add
Scroll down and click the checkbox next to ‘Chinese (Simplified) – Microsoft Pinyin IME’.
Click ok here and in Region and Languages as well.

You can now change to Chinese pinyin entry using the Language Bar in the lower right of your screen.

How to type using Pinyin?

To type Chinese, simply select ‘Chinese’ language and then type pinyin using your keyboard. You’ll be presented with a number of different characters. Select the number of the character/s you want.

First, try restarting your device and allow access to your audio or webcam. If your microphone and webcam are still not detected, please proceed with the following steps.

1- My microphone cannot be detected

Make sure that you've allowed access to your microphone and the volume is turned up

— Ensure that your microphone is connected to your device correctly. — Make sure your microphone is authorized in your device settings and that the volume is loud enough.

My sound quality isn't good

— Make sure you are in a calm and quiet location and there is nothing obstructing your microphone speakers. Surrounding noises can affect the quality of your recordings. — We recommend using headphones or a headset, if you have them. This will enhance the quality of your recordings.

The volume of my recordings is too low

— Increase your microphone's volume. — Try to speak as close to your computer's microphone as possible. — Speak as clearly and as loudly as you can.

CEFR Levels

| Each Pipplet test taker will receive a grade corresponding to a CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level. There are 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Pipplet also provides further information on how the candidate's grade is situated within a given level, through the addition of "+" or "-" to the overall grade.

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.

Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2 Waystage or elementary

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

How to take the Pipplet test in non-latin alphabet languages?

The Pipplet test requires writing in a given language. That's why it is imperative that you have a keyboard allowing you to input in the language of the test.

For most of the languages, you can either equip yourself with a keyboard or get a sticker set. These stickers are easily found on the Internet for 3 or 4€.

For all languages on Google Chrome

| You can install Google Input Tools. It’s an extension for your browser that will allow you to enter text in non-latin languages.

Depending on the language, several options are available:

Transliteration (icon depicting a letter from the language) Just enter words as they are pronounced and the tool will ask you to choose from a list of corresponding words.
Virtual Keyboard (keyboard icon) Your keyboard will correspond to the language in question keyboard. We recommend this option if you’re already familiar with the language keyboard and can type without looking at your physical keyboard.
Handwriting (pencil icon) You can draw symbols on your touchpad, and the system will transform it into the written characters. This option is not recommended, as it’s very time-consuming.
